How to Replace the Accessory Drive Belts on All 1999 - 2005 Toyota Corolla / Celica / Echo / MR2 1.8L 4 Cyl Engines.

Adjustment

A/C Compressor

Tension on the air conditioning compressor belt is adjusted by means of an idler pulley.

  • Loosen the lockbolt and then turn the adjusting bolt on the idler pulley until the desired tension is achieved. Retighten the idler pulley lockbolt. All of the bolts are either a 12mm or 14mm.
  • Tighten the lockbolt securely. If a new belt has been installed, always recheck the tension after a few hundred miles of driving.5S-FE:7A-FE:

Alternator Belt

To adjust the tension of the alternator drive belt, loosen the pivot and mounting bolts on the alternator. These bolts should be either 12mm or 14mm. Using a wooden hammer handle or a broomstick, or even your hand if you're strong enough, move the alternator one way or the other until the tension is within acceptable limits.

CAUTION: NEVER use a screwdriver or any other metal device such as a prybar, as a lever when adjusting the alternator belt tension!

  • Tighten the mounting bolts securely. If a new belt has been installed, always recheck the tension after a few hundred miles of driving.
  • Alternator belt tension on all other engines is adjusted by means of a tension adjusting bolt with is usually a 12mm or 14mm. Loosen the alternator pivot bolt and the locking bolt, then turn the tension adjusting bolt until proper tension is achieved.
  • Tighten the mounting bolts securely. If a new belt has been installed, always recheck the tension after a few hundred miles of driving.

Power Steering Pump

On some models, tension on the power steering pump belt is adjusted by means of an idler pulley. Loosen the lockbolt and then turn the adjusting bolt on the idler pulley until the desired tension is achieved. Retighten the idler pulley lockbolt. All of these bolts are usually a 12mm or 14mm.

  • Tighten the lockbolt securely. If a new belt has been installed, always recheck the tension after a few hundred miles of driving.

Power steering pump belt tension on other models is adjusted by means of a tension adjusting bolt. Loosen the power steering pump pivot bolt and then turn the tension adjusting bolt until proper tension is achieved.

  • Tighten the mounting bolts securely. If a new belt has been installed, always recheck the tension after a few hundred miles of driving.

Drive Belt Routings

Inspection

Inspect the drive belt for signs of glazing or cracking. A glazed belt will be perfectly smooth from slippage, while a good belt will have a slight texture of fabric visible. Cracks will usually start at the inner edge of the belt and run outward. All worn or damaged drive belts should be replaced immediately.

Removal & Installation

  1. Remove the right hand cover under the engine.
  2. Turn the drive belt tensioner clockwise to relieve tension on the belt.
  3. Remove the fan and generator V belt.
  4. Return the tensioner to the unloaded position.

NOTE: When retracting the tensioner, turn it clockwise slowly in 3 sec. or more. Be sure not to apply force rapidly. After the tensioner is retracted all the way, do not apply force any more than necessary.

To install:

  1. Turn the drive belt tensioner clockwise
  2. Install the belt.
  3. Install the right hand cover under the engine.
