Finding Rebuilt Transmissions

  • In your local phone book look for automotive dealers or shops that rebuild transmissions. Call each one to check on pricing and availability. You may be surprised how much prices can range for rebuilt transmissions. Ask each shop or dealer about their experience rebuilding transmissions and if they guarantee the work.
  • Go to a local junk or salvage yard to find the transmission you need. This is a great way to get auto parts at a very low price. You can take the transmission you get from the junkyard to the shop to have it rebuilt and probably avoid paying a higher price for it initially. If you have a friend who can work on the used transmission from the junkyard you can probably save even more money over taking it to an area auto shop.
  • Search online for rebuilt transmission dealers. When you shop online, you will often find a lot of different options. It is important to check the status of the company you are buying from online to ensure you’re getting a quality product though. See if you can find some online reviews to read about the business before buying a rebuilt transmission from them.

Read your car’s manual to determine what type of transmission you need. The manual will also include important information you might need, such as the vehicle’s engine size.

Used Transmission Care

Used transmissions can still be like new or have many miles on them. If your used transmission has less than 75,000 miles on it, you can treat is as you would any transmission with regularly scheduled maintenance. High mileage transmissions should be serviced right away after installation and be filled with high mileage transmission fluid for long life.

  • Service the transmission upon installation by draining out the old fluid. You can drain it by removing the drain plug. Some transmissions have no drain plug, so you must remove the filter pan in that case.
  • Replace the transmission filter and gasket once all the old fluid is drained by removing all the bolts that hold it on. Do not lose any of the bolts.
  • Clean off any fluid from where the pan makes contact with the transmission case and scrape off any old gasket material. The surface must be clean for a proper seal.
  •  Apply a fine bead of RTV silicone sealant to the transmission case and filter pan once you are ready to put the filter pan back on.
  • Replace the old fluid with regular or high-mileage transmission fluid in the refill tube inside the engine compartment. How much your vehicle takes depends on the size of the transmission, but start with 3.5 quarts. Refer to the transmission fluid container to ensure it is suitable for your vehicle before purchasing.
  • Start the engine and slowly move the gearshift through each gear, including reverse and neutral. This will make sure that the fluid is circulating properly.
  • Once the engine is warm, check the fluid and add more if needed to meet the "Full" mark as indicated on the transmission fluid dipstick.
